How do you describe the Tulsa World? It’s more than a daily newspaper, really. Since it’s beginning in 1905, the paper that would become the 2nd-largest in the state has been something of a local and statewide – even national – icon. It began amidst a number of competitors and bucked the trend towards evening papers by delivering early in the morning. Everything from the Ku Klux Klan and the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot to the pivotal campaign for Tulsa’s water supply has been covered by this paper and I hope she’s around for a long time to come.
So again I ask, how do you describe the ‘World? As I set out to redesign the pages that would provide the support for those wanting to dig deeper than the breaking news of the day, I asked myself these questions. After digging into her history and plights through the ages, a few adjectives sprang to mind: Determined. Loyal. Dependable. And despite what others may say about the industry as a whole, this newspaper has been forward-thinking from the start. Everything down to the colors for this redesign were influenced by these adjectives.
